With the help of healthcare professionals including infection control and nursing staff specialists our design incorporates some unique features, which improve infection control and patient care.

Benefits of Hygi-Zone
Mattress covers are always liable to being cut or punctured and allowing fluid ingress. Since thorough mattress cover inspections are lengthy and spaced many months apart, the need is for invading organisms to be contained and killed.
Infection outbreaks can quickly affect numerous patients before their origin is traced. For example, in an outbreak of serious wound infections on a Merseyside orthopaedic ward, 10 patients were effected and had to stay an average of 17 days longer in hospital at a cost of £22,199 in total . One of the patients died from the infection. (O'Donoghue and Allen , JHI 1992)
A punctured mattress can act as a potent warm environment for many organisms. Neither surface cleaning, nor such methods as steam cleaning, can reach a mattress’ interior. What is more the movements of the patient on top helps to expel the bugs out through the hole or zip fastener. From there many organisms can be further dispersed by bed making.
In contrast, if a puncture to a Hygi-Zone cover occurred, the mattress would not become a reservoir of infection due to the “Four Lines of Defence”. Hence there would be less risk of starting a serious outbreak in the long interval period before the next routine mattress inspection. (Appendix with examples is available on request). Many patients are likely to lie on that mattress between inspections. Judging from the “unnoticed” extend of mattress contamination shown by the Department of Health reports and inspections, Hygi-Zone will give a major benefit in reducing infection rates and the costs of infection.
Hygi-Zone mattresses have four lines of defence against contamination:
Double anti-bacterial control:
1. Hygi-Zone's crucially new and unique foam formulation incorporates an additive which kills MRSA, Staphylococcus Aureus, E-Coli and others in the event of a puncture to both the mattress covers.
2. Hygi-Zone's Silver-based cover is inherently anti-microbial, waterproof, vapour permeable and kills 99.9% of MRSA bacteria as well as numerous other organisms.
Double physical defence:
3. In order to further protect the core mattress against the risk of fluid ingress, Hygi-Zone has a patented design of second transparent skin (also waterproof/vapour-permeable) that envelopes the foam.
4. The Hygi-Zone’s zip is located underneath the mattress enabling the top surface and sides to be made from one panel fabric:
- This reduces the number of seams and minimises the risk of fluid ingress.
- This design does away with loose flaps shielding side zips as those often get damaged when they obstruct the side rails.
- The Hygi-Zone one-way-up design ensures that the delicate nature of the skin-side mattress cover material is always upper most. This way a tougher material for the base can be used which is more suitable for contact with the sometimes sharp metal bed-frames or rough storage floors.
